In the course students will obtain knowledge about the basic design elements of underground structures and basic methods for design and assessment of the primary lining of underground structures (rigid and flexible lining, etc.). Students will be introduced to geotechnical investigation and the influence of geology on the alignment of underground structures, rock classifications for underground structures, an introduction to the theory of rock pressures, tunnel systems and systems for larger and smaller underground structures, blasting and shaft sinking. The course also includes the assessment of surface deformation and an introduction to excavated underground structures and microtunnelling.
