Geotechnical engineering is an indispensable part of modern civil engineering. The scope of activities within this sector includes the design of building foundations, underpinning of existing structures, provision of construction pits and cuts, soil improvement, design of underground structures and much more. The importance of the field continues to grow with efforts to use geotechnical structures for energy purposes. The course consists of two units. The first part presents the basic principles of soil mechanics relevant to practical applications. The conclusion of this unit is devoted to the behaviour of soil under thermomechanical loading. The second part of the course is a review of the elements of special foundation engineering including energy geotechnical structures.

The exercise and lecture handouts will be provided by a lecturer!
